WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO LARGE

Now there's a saying, "would you like to go large".
Well I would never have thought that would be applicable to art but it makes sense when you need to express a lot more than a standard canvas of say 18"x 24" will allow.
Of course I am not saying that 18"x 24" isn't a large canvas, for some it's way too big and I'm not saying that everyone should paint on large canvasses, what I am saying is that I have come to a point in my artistic world where I need to express my feelings in a much larger environment.
Regardless of what size our canvas becomes we are creating a world either from imagination, or from a vision or picture of something that we can find in the countryside or seaside, depending on where we are at the moment.
I have a habit of creating a landscape or seascape from my imagination and although I do complete the scene, I am conscious of the fact there is a lot more going on that I don't have room for.
With this in mind I decided I needed to go large.
So, my preference became 4ft x 2ft, or at least in that vacinity.
I have started with MDF, but I may change to ply later, it's early days.
One thing I love is the freedom space gives me. Whether I am painting fine detail or slightly abstract, my future is large, that goes for my popcorn as well.
Depth in a painting is really important to create that sense of reality and having a large surface to work on allows depth to be created to a much greater degree, it also allows more freedom when giving or taking away from a painting. This one reason I felt a need to expand my painting surface and thereby expand the landscape I wanted to create.
Of course this is where I am now, but for anyone needing to change direction slightly this is a brilliant way of doing so, as the saying goes, a change is as good as a rest.
I have just completed the priming process on my new boards ready for my next creation, it's quiet a long process but well worth it, so, it's time to get creative. Until next time remember, painting is easy until you learn how to paint.
