I am always amazed at how different people have different ideas about what to paint and how to paint it.

I mean, when you ask someone to paint a particular object like a tree, the difference in conception of what a tree is like is sometimes quite astonishing. Try asking a few friends to draw/paint something simple and be ready for the contrast in perception.
It is the way we all see the same thing in different ways that makes some of us become artists, and if we see those things in such a way that everyone else is amazed then we can start to believe we have chosen the right path.
Having decided that painting is the correct way to go and it’s what you want, it is then your choice as to how far you are willing to go to enhance your skills and knowledge thereby increasing your ability to create a scene of your choice that will give you the satisfaction you desire.
So now we come back to your friends and their interpretations of the challenge you set them.
Getting a new perspective on what people see, and like, helps tremendously when you are trying as I do to decide what your brush is going to create on your canvas. Personally I can sometimes sit in front of my canvas for far longer than I should because I am not sure what I am going to paint. Sometimes it takes far too long and it’s then the brush does the painting for me, making that first mark is not always as crucial as you may think. Moving paint on canvases is all down to what is going on inside your mind albeit that you may not have a clue what is in fact really going on.
Once you have made a decision about where that paint is going it doesn’t matter if it’s what you want or not because, once you have started, your painting will create itself and ultimately you will be happy with what you have completed in that world you didn’t know you went to. So, have fun and take the bull by the horns, or, the brush by the bristles.
Happy painting my friends, be happy, and remember painting is easy until you learn how to paint.
